My Old House in Selma, North Carolina

September 7, 2008 in Memories by Kyle Yates

I just woke up from a good night’s sleep. But in my sleep, I had a dream; a dream of my old house back in Selma, North Carolina.

I love that old house. I always think about it. It was where I grew up, albeit, I only lived in that house for 3 years. But they were some of my fondest years, from 9 years old to 12 years old.

I check on this house sometimes using Google Earth. I talk about it to my students when I’m explaining about homes in America or life growing up.

I remember the room where I slept, big, brown, above and beside the carport overlooking the majority of the yard and a huge pecan tree. Wow, I can remember where everything was in that room right now – huge flashback! – even where my furniture was.

My dream this morning was that I bought the house, or someone bought it for me. I’m not sure who bought it, but know it was now my house and I was there to fix it back up so my family could come enjoy it and learn about it and grow up there. My parents would later come and live in it and retire there in the town we all often talk about because we have such wonderful memories of.

Recently, I have been getting back in touch with people from that part of the world, thanks to Facebook. Who knows, one day, my family and I may end up in that house, whether it’s for a brief visit or living in it as our own. Maybe it will be my house when I die and go to Heaven! If so, I hope God does some remodeling to it. I would imagine after all these years that it has gotten even more rickety!

Hey Kim, Mom, Dad! Any of you got photos of that old house? I don’t. Just the ones in my mind.
