Tanzaku App

September 16, 2009 in Computer, Internet by Kyle Yates

My latest app download, one I am really impressed with, goes by the name of Tanzaku.

The light version is a good download to try the app out, but know this, nothing you create remains there the next day. In other words, everything you create while testing the app, notes, folders and/or drawings will all disappear at the strike of midnight. So don’t put too much time into what you create. Test it and either buy it or move on!

What I love about the app is I can write with my finger, which enables me to get down more on paper so to speak than in typing mode. Sure there are other apps out there that allow this same feature but this one is more feature-rich compared to other apps.

The screen goes portrait and landscape with the better layout being landscape. This enables you to write longer words on the screen unlike other apps.

If you make any mistakes, all you have to do is double-tap a word and select backspace then rewrite the word. Or you can do the same double-tap and then write in the second writing area and add onto the sentence or paragraph; two things other apps don’t offer.

It’s great for taking notes, drawing and organising everything you write into folders. You can create folders and folders under those folders and so on down the line for a limitless hierarchy.

If you don’t like using your finger you can always opt for one of the writing pens now available for iPhones. It may improve your writing if you generally have chicken scratch. But that depends on how bad your chicken scratch is!

Two iphones in the family

April 3, 2009 in Gear, Internet by Kyle Yates

As of last week, we are now the proud owners of two lovely iPhones. We traded in our old not-so-user-friendly-compared-to-iPhone phones and now look back at the other phones as the type of phones we will never lay ears on again.

How anyone can forego owning and using an iPhone is beyond me unless money is a problem. Still, iPhones can be purchased these days for next to nothing…at least here in Japan. Denise got hers for 0 yen, the current campaign for Softbank users and those who are not, if they don’t mind owning the 8 gigabyte model.

Since we got our iPhones, two of our friends have bought them. Others are also contemplating the move.

If you own the more archaic phones like we used to, you may want to rethink changing to an iPhone and give your old phone to your kids as a digital camera like we did.

iPhones are really good tools besides the fact that they are phones. You can add applications, also known as apps, that will help you accomplish your daily chores more easily.

A few apps I’m using are for good keeping my work schedule, recording messages, emailing, browsing the Internet, blogging – currently using it write this blog article – recipes, a dictionary, todos, and the list goes on.

If you don’t have an iPhone, go to your cellular phone dealer when you get the next opportunity and ask them if you can try out an iPhone. I truly believe you we be happy you changed to one.

Did Facebook Just Shoot Itself?

February 17, 2009 in Internet by Kyle Yates

If you have not heard yet, Facebook changed the way they do things with your information, photos and things you post to the site about two weeks ago. Now, before there is a panic and people start deleting their information, we should get to the bottom of the reason they changed their policy statement.

Many of you may be asking yourselves if your information and things you post to Facebook are protected? The bottomline answer is a wishy-washy yes and no. Facebook protects your information, but once you allow others to view that information, you lose your right to privacy because Facebook cannot guarantee that the person you just gave permission to use your information will use it according to how you wish it to be used.

In otherwords, you had better be careful who you share information with because once they have it, there is no telling what they will do with it. You had better be able to trust the person you are giving out information to before you entrust that information to them. Facebook changed their policy that better states how the information you use gets used. While they can delete your account and information, they cannot delete the information you have posted and given out to others because once that information has been given out, it becomes that person’s information, photos, videos and whatnot. Facebook cannot go into every single friend you have given permission to and delete your information. That is the basic jist of their new policy changes.

Now, to better ensure your information is not used in an adverse way, what you can do to avoid having problems later down the road, if you ever decide to delete your account with Facebook, is to not post anything that would cause problems for you down the road. Be responsible in posting and adding friends. Overall, that is the safest way to protect yourself. Either that, or just don’t let anyone know anything about yourself or don’t join Facebook. It is ultimately your choice!

Facebook is covering their butts with their latest policy changes. Facebook has huge numbers of people who have signed up with them who trust that Facebook will not use their information in an adverse way. If Facebook were to change their policies in a way that said they would use your information and mine and that they do not care about my sense of privacy, in effect stab me in the back, they would be shooting themselves in the foot and everyone on Facebook would quit in a heartbeat. No company that wishes to do good business is going to shoot themselves in the foot knowingly, especially a company like Facebook that counts on users being able to share information with their friends and people they trust. Using Facebook involves a lot of trust. It is what Facebook has built itself on.

But like people always say, “Trust no one further than you can throw them.” If Facebook users keep the company in check, Facebook will in turn stay trustworthy. Ultimately, Facebook is a business, and businesses are in the business of doing business. They want to make money and people have money. If no one uses Facebook, they cannot make any money. It is in their best interest to please their members and it is in the best interest for its users, you and me, to hold them accountable and be responsible with what you say and post!
